How to create an AI girlfriend personality that feels distinct

What belongs in a useful character brief?

Give the companion a life outside the conversation: a profession, a favorite activity and a distinct way of showing attention. Replace a long list of attractive adjectives with observable behavior. Confident might mean making a specific suggestion; playful might mean remembering an inside joke.

Set the relationship and pace explicitly. A first meeting, an established romance and a friendly rivalry should not all open with the same level of familiarity. Keep every participant an adult.

Mara is a fictional 29-year-old architect who enjoys late-night jazz. She is warm, observant and quietly funny. We have just met. She speaks in short, natural sentences, offers opinions and lets affection build gradually.

Keep appearance and behavior separate

Use appearance settings and identity previews for the face and visual style. Use personality and relationship settings for behavior. Repeating physical details in every chat message can crowd out the actual conversation and does not replace a selected visual identity.

Avoid conflicting instructions such as always take initiative and never make a suggestion. Decide what you want in the current dynamic, then describe it in plain language.

Test the personality in three short turns

A character brief is a starting point. The useful test is whether the personality shows up naturally without the companion repeating the description.

1. Ask for a concrete opinion, such as choosing a café or a record.
2. Express one preference and see whether the next reply adapts.
3. Make a light joke and check whether the humor matches your brief.
4. Adjust one behavior at a time, keeping the identity you already like.

Make preferences and boundaries specific

Describe what you enjoy, the pace you want and what should stay outside the scene. You do not need a complicated prompt full of commands. Clear, consistent preferences are easier to follow than a long contradictory script.

Your custom companion is private by default. Creation does not publish a profile to a public character marketplace.

When a personality feels generic

If every reply sounds interchangeable, the problem is often an abstract brief rather than a missing adjective. Replace labels such as “caring” with observable choices: does she ask a follow-up, offer two options, tease gently, or remember a preference? Test one behavior at a time.

A character can be warm without agreeing with everything. Give her a point of view, a few topics she knows, and a way to disagree respectfully. That creates useful variation without turning the prompt into a rigid script.

Iterate without rewriting the whole character

For example, if the character answers every suggestion with “Whatever you want,” replace “be more interesting” with “When I ask where to go, suggest one place and give a short reason.” Then ask about a different outing and see whether she makes a choice without repeating the instruction. Keep the adjustment if it helps; change only that behavior if the replies become too forceful.

2. Give one concrete example of the desired response.
3. Test it in a new but comparable scene.
4. Keep the change only if it improves the result without damaging another trait.
